Each night he waits by the lift on his landing, suitcase packed, so that he will be taken without waking his family.

He is not arrested. The reprieve is not an acquittal but a postponement — an ongoing threat that shapes the rest of his life. Barnes’s novel follows Shostakovich through three pivotal encounters with Soviet power, asking what these encounters cost him and what they produced.

The Question of Cowardice

Shostakovich signed letters condemning political prisoners. He joined the Communist Party. He accepted the chairmanship of the Union of Composers.
