Frequently Asked Questions

What Khaled Hosseini book should I read first?

Start with The Kite Runner — it is his most structurally gripping novel and the one that introduced him to the world. A Thousand Splendid Suns is the natural second read and is arguably his most emotionally devastating work.

Are Hosseini's novels connected?

They share Afghanistan as their central subject and their emotional register — all three deal with guilt, sacrifice, and redemption against the backdrop of Afghanistan's modern political history. But they are entirely separate narratively, with different characters.

Is Hosseini Afghan-American?

Yes. Hosseini was born in Kabul in 1965 and moved to the United States in 1980 after his family was granted political asylum. He works as a physician and humanitarian ambassador for the UNHCR as well as a novelist.
