Where to Start with Ildefonso Falcones: The Best First Novel

New to Ildefonso Falcones? The Cathedral of the Sea is the obvious starting point — here's what to expect and how to read his complete works.

By Clara Whitmore

There is only one sensible answer: The Cathedral of the Sea.

It is his debut, his masterpiece, and one of the most successful historical novels published in the early 21st century. Over five million copies sold worldwide is not an accident — the novel genuinely delivers what readers of historical fiction want: a fully realised medieval world, a compelling protagonist, and a story that uses personal drama to illuminate the larger forces of history.

Start here: The Cathedral of the Sea

14th-century Barcelona: a serf’s son named Arnau Estanyol makes his way from poverty to prosperity as the Gothic church of Santa Maria del Mar rises stone by stone around him. The Black Death, the Inquisition, the feudal system, and the social tensions of a medieval city all converge on his story. If you have any interest in medieval Spain or historical epic fiction, this is essential reading.

After The Cathedral of the Sea, both options are good:

The Hand of Fatima — moves to 16th-century Andalusia and the expulsion of the Moors. If the historical Spain angle was what drew you to Cathedral, this is the next book.

The Painter of Souls — returns to Barcelona but to the 18th century, with a painter of religious art as protagonist. If the Barcelona setting was what you loved, start here.
