Erin Morgenstern Books in Order: Complete Reading Guide

Both Erin Morgenstern books in order — The Night Circus and The Starless Sea. Reading guide for fans of immersive, atmospheric fantasy fiction.

By Clara Whitmore

Erin Morgenstern has published two novels, eight years apart. Both prioritise atmosphere and wonder over conventional narrative momentum, and both reward readers who can surrender to a world rather than demand that it deliver a conventional plot.

Erin Morgenstern Books in Publication Order

1. The Night Circus — 2011

Start here. A mysterious circus that only appears at night is the arena for a magical competition between two young illusionists who have been trained since childhood for a contest whose rules they do not know. One of the most beloved debut novels of its decade — a book that creates a complete world through prose alone.

2. The Starless Sea — 2019

A graduate student finds a book in his university library that contains a story about his own childhood — and is drawn through it into an underground world of stories, harbours, and a sea that smells of honey and blood. More ambitious in scope than The Night Circus; slightly less perfectly controlled. The world-building is extraordinary.

Where to Start with Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus is both the better book and the correct entry point. It introduces Morgenstern’s style — dense, sensory, world-building-first — in a tighter and more satisfying form than The Starless Sea.

If you love The Night Circus, read The Starless Sea for more of the same world-immersion quality in a more diffuse package. If you are lukewarm about The Night Circus, The Starless Sea will not convert you — it asks for the same kind of surrender.

What Kind of Reader Loves Morgenstern

Morgenstern is not for everyone. Her books do not have tight plotting or strong cause-and-effect momentum. What they have is atmosphere: the specific feeling of being in a world so complete and sensory that you do not want to leave it. Readers who love Susanna Clarke, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell in particular, will find Morgenstern natural territory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I read The Night Circus before The Starless Sea?

Yes. The Night Circus is the stronger book and the correct starting point. It also establishes your expectations for Morgenstern's style — atmospheric, plot-light, wonder-heavy — so The Starless Sea makes more sense read second.

Are The Night Circus and The Starless Sea connected?

No. They are entirely separate stories with different characters and settings. Both are atmospheric, wonder-driven fantasy novels, but they share no plot or characters.

Is Erin Morgenstern writing a third book?

As of 2026, no third novel has been announced. Morgenstern is known for taking significant time between books — eight years separated The Night Circus (2011) and The Starless Sea (2019).
