Where to Start with Elin Hilderbrand

The Perfect Couple (2018) is the most widely recommended entry point. It opens with a body found on a Nantucket beach the morning of a wedding and spends the novel moving between suspects, backstory, and the question of which secret destroyed which marriage. It’s a mystery wrapped in a beach novel — more plotting than most of her books, and a structure that works well for readers coming in cold.

The Hotel Nantucket (2022) is the best of her recent books and arguably her most entertaining. The ghost of a woman murdered in the hotel a century ago watches the new owner attempt to restore it, while the ensemble cast of staff and guests generates the kind of layered social comedy Hilderbrand does best.

28 Summers (2020) is the one to read if you want to understand what she’s actually capable of. One chapter per year, one weekend per chapter, a relationship told across nearly three decades — it’s a structural conceit that could easily feel gimmicky and instead produces genuine emotional accumulation.

The Best Elin Hilderbrand Novels

The Perfect Couple remains her most tightly plotted book — the mystery structure keeps the narrative under productive pressure in ways her looser standalones sometimes lack.

28 Summers is the book that most surprised her existing readers and won her new ones. The annual-snapshot structure generates something rarer in her work: the feeling of time genuinely passing, relationships changing under their own weight.

The Hotel Nantucket is her warmest and most entertaining recent novel. The ensemble of hotel staff and guests gives her more character surface to work with than her typical smaller casts.

Silver Girl (2011) remains underrated — the Bernie Madoff backdrop gives it a specificity most beach reads avoid, and the female friendship at its centre is her best sustained character work of the early period.
