Where to Start with Robert Wilson: The Best First Book

Not sure which Robert Wilson to read first? This guide matches every reader to the right starting point — A Small Death in Lisbon, The Blind Man of Seville, or the Medway thrillers.

By Tom Gillespie

Robert Wilson has written in three distinct registers across his career: the West African crime thrillers (the Medway series), the atmospheric Lisbon standalone, and the psychologically complex Seville police procedurals (the Falcón series). The right starting point depends on which of these appeals most.

If you want his best book first

Start with: A Small Death in Lisbon

A Small Death in Lisbon is Wilson’s most celebrated novel — a dual-timeline thriller in which a contemporary Lisbon murder investigation connects to wartime Portugal’s role as a neutral country supplying wolfram to Nazi Germany. It won the CWA Gold Dagger, it is a standalone (no series knowledge required), and it is the single best expression of what Wilson does: deep geographical knowledge, historical layering, and a crime that opens up an entire society.

If you want to start the Falcón series

Start with: The Blind Man of Seville

The Blind Man of Seville introduces Inspector Javier Falcón — one of European crime fiction’s most psychologically complex detectives — through a murder staged in front of a Goya painting that pulls the investigation into Falcón’s own family history. Seville is rendered with extraordinary depth and specificity. Read the complete Falcón reading order →

If you want the West African thrillers

Start with: Blood Is Dirt

Blood Is Dirt is the best Medway novel and the second Wilson to win the CWA Gold Dagger. Set in Lagos’s oil-corruption economy, it works as a standalone despite being the third in the series — but for the full experience, begin with Instruments of Darkness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is A Small Death in Lisbon a standalone or part of a series?

A Small Death in Lisbon is a standalone novel — it is not part of either the Medway or Falcón series. It is also his most widely read and awarded novel, and the best first book for most readers.

Can I read the Falcón books without reading the Medway series first?

Yes — the two series are entirely separate. You do not need to read the Medway novels before starting the Falcón series. Most readers begin with The Blind Man of Seville and never read the Medway books at all, though they reward readers who want to understand where Wilson came from.
