Italian-British author of swashbuckling historical fiction, whose Captain Blood and Scaramouche created the template for the adventure novel and classic Hollywood cinema.

Rafael Sabatini was an Italian-born British author who became one of the most popular historical novelists of the early twentieth century, his swashbuckling tales of honor, adventure, and romance in the Age of Sail inspiring some of Hollywood’s most beloved early films. Born in Italy to an Italian father and an English mother, Sabatini was schooled in Portugal and Switzerland and spoke five languages before settling in England, where he began writing the historical fiction that would make his name.

Captain Blood, published in 1922, is his most celebrated novel: the story of Peter Blood, an Irish physician unjustly sentenced to slavery in the West Indies following Monmouth’s Rebellion, who escapes to become the most feared buccaneer in the Caribbean while remaining, at heart, a man of principle and honor. The novel combines meticulous historical research with irresistible narrative momentum and a romantic hero who operates by a code that transcends the law. Errol Flynn’s 1935 film adaptation was a sensation and remains a classic of the swashbuckler genre.

Sabatini also wrote Scaramouche, the tale of a French revolutionary who becomes a swordsman and actor, and The Sea Hawk, another pirate adventure. His formula — a wronged hero, a corrupt but glamorous world, love won through courage and wit — was enormously influential on popular fiction and cinema. For readers who delight in historical adventure with genuine narrative flair, Sabatini’s best work remains immensely pleasurable.
