Chinese-American author of the Sword of Kaigen, a self-published fantasy novel that became one of the most acclaimed indie fantasy releases of recent years.

M. L. Wang is a Chinese-American author who first came to widespread attention with The Sword of Kaigen, a standalone fantasy novel self-published in 2019 that quickly became one of the most celebrated independently published fantasy releases in years. The book won the Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off (SPFBO) competition and gained a devoted following through word-of-mouth recommendations, eventually reaching a vast audience far beyond the typical reach of self-published fiction.

The Sword of Kaigen is set in a Japan-inspired fantasy world where a remote village of elite warriors is protected by a tradition of blood sorcery. The story centers on Misaki, a woman who has buried her past and her true capabilities in conformity to her village’s rigid gender roles, and her husband Mamoru, a warrior of unquestioned excellence who begins to discover that the history he was taught is a lie. The novel blends intense martial arts action with an emotionally devastating family drama and sharp political commentary.

Wang’s achievement is particularly notable given that Sword of Kaigen succeeds without the traditional publishing infrastructure behind it. Her prose is precise and her emotional intelligence remarkable. She has since written Theonite: Planet Adyn and other works, continuing to build a devoted readership. For readers of epic fantasy who also appreciate deeply human stories about family, sacrifice, and identity, Wang’s work is essential.
