Kathleen Kent is a descendant of Martha Carrier, one of the women hanged as a witch at Salem in 1692, and she drew on that family history for her debut novel.
The Heretic’s Daughter (2008) tells the story of the Salem witch trials through the eyes of Carrier’s daughter, vividly evoking the fear, injustice, and human cost of the hysteria. She followed it with The Wolves of Andover and later turned to crime fiction with the Betty Rhyzyk series set in Dallas.
Kent is admired for the vivid historical detail and emotional power of her fiction, and for bringing the Salem story to life through a personal lens.
