Anna Burns is a Northern Irish novelist whose experimental fiction bears unflinching witness to the violence of the Troubles through radically destabilized language.
Anna Burns was born in Belfast and grew up in the Ardoyne during the height of the Troubles, and that formation is the source of everything essential in her fiction. She has published only three novels, each formally distinct and deeply felt, and she has not made the work easy. Her reputation rests on the understanding that the difficulty is the point — that the world she is describing produced a specific deformation of language and consciousness that conventional realist fiction cannot adequately render.
Milkman (2018) won the Booker Prize and announced her to a wide readership, though opinion divided sharply between those who found it transformative and those who found it impenetrable. Set in a fictionalized 1970s Belfast that refuses to name its characters or its city, narrated in dense, recursive, almost compulsive prose, the novel follows a young woman subjected to increasingly menacing attention from a powerful paramilitary figure. The community’s surveillance is total — to be seen with the wrong person, reading a book while walking, or simply failing to signal the correct loyalties is to court danger — and Burns finds a formal equivalent for that surveillance in prose that constantly circles back, qualifies, and second-guesses itself. No one has names because in that world, naming things is dangerous. Burns reportedly wrote much of the novel while severely ill with fibromyalgia, and there is something in its claustrophobic intensity that feels hard-won.
Her debut, No Bones (2001), follows a Catholic Belfast family through the decades of the Troubles from the 1960s to the peace process, and is somewhat more conventionally structured, though still marked by her distinctive attention to psychological damage. Little Constructions (2007) moves in a stranger, more darkly comic direction. Taken together the three books form a small but irreplaceable body of work.
